Waterstones
These are superfi ne grits.
The stones are used to bring the metal to an
absolute mirror fi nish, and hence an ultra sharp edge. These
stones are hard and so only need to be sprinkled with water just
before use, and left dry at all other times. They are mounted on
bases, the 4,000 and 6,000 grit are 190mm x 63mm x 19mm, the
10,000 grit 200mm x 75mm x 25mm. The 10,000 grit stone is
supplied with a Nagura stone.
This 800 grit stone is a
top quality Ice Bear brand
stone and a real must in the
waterstone armoury. Used to fl atten the backs of blades and
form the edge, it leaves the metal dull but smooth. Size 200mm x
63mm x 30mm.
The very coarse 240 grit stone
cuts with amazing speed, but
as is the nature of these stones,
wears somewhat quicker than an
oilstone. However, it can easily be re-trued, so
this massive 205 x 75 x 50mm lump is going to last a long time.
Use for badly nicked edges. Slightly smoother is the 400 grit stone
(205 x 75 x 50mm), excellent for reforming the bevels on worn
plane irons and chisels.
For anyone who has not used a
Japanese waterstone before then a
combination provides a good introduction. Size 200 x 50 x 25mm.

Medium 1,200 grit waterstones are used to remove scratches and
further refi ne and partly polish the surface following honing on
a coarse stone. The Ice Bear brand medium stone measures 200

2.3/8” wide plane iron.

BESTER waterstones, manufactured by Imanishi in Kyoto, Japan
have almost become the standard with Japanese professional
woodworkers. They feature a moderately strong bond that allows
abrasive particles release quickly, maintaining a fast cutting rate,
yet resist wear. These stones behave similarly to a natural stone,
the feedback tells you how fast they cut. Tests have shown they
abrade O1, A2 and M2 steels at a rapid rate and remain fl at just as
long as slower cutting stones with stronger bonds. Bester 1,000
grit stones have a vitrifi ed bond and should be soaked for about
15 minutes before use. The fi ne 4,000 and 8,000 grit resin-bonded
Imanishi stones need just a quick spray. Overall dimensions are
205mm x 75mm x 25mm.

Originally designed for sharpening high alloy steels, these stones
perform very well on the toughest steels. Signifi cantly faster, they
are between two and fi ve times faster than waterstones that have
less durable abrasive or stronger bonds. Sintered under heat and
pressure, a Sigma stone readily releases new, aggressive particles
during use. The 1,000 grit produces a primary bevel, the 3,000 grit
quickly establishes a micro-bevel and the 10,000 grit provides a
ne fi nish. All require only a few minutes of soaking before use, do
not keep in water.

Rubber holders at either end, one fi xed and one sliding, which
can be tightened by means of two knurled screws to hold the
waterstone fi rmly but gently. A central rubber block provides
extra support. Grips on the underside prevent your waterstone
walking away whilst you are trying to sharpen a blade. Also
suitable for oil stones and diamond stones.

Amongst the many advantages of sharpening tools with a Japanese
waterstone is the ease of fl attening or resurfacing of the stone. This
gives the user the option of always sharpening on a fl at surface,
thus obtaining the very best results. Use this new 150 grit ceramic
stone to regularly dress the stone. The hard ceramic particles and
bond means it will never wear out in normal use. Keep one to hand
and use frequently by just rubbing it with a circular motion across
the top of the waterstone. Size 155 x 52 x 25mm.

Used for cleaning a glazed surface or creating a slurry prior to
honing on fi ner stones, thereby speeding up the process. These
artifi cial Nagura stones are the equivalent of the 8,000 gold
stone and therefore there will not be a problem with particle
contamination when used on other grit stones. Size: 70 x 20 x 23mm

A compact and comprehensive system for both the use and
storage of waterstones up to 300mm long. Twin clamping arms
hold both coarse and fi ne stones at the same time. When not in
use a cover keeps the stones clean. The large base unit has room
enough for three or more stones. Manufactured from tough,
rigid ABS with all metal parts in non-corrosive stainless steel and
anodised aluminium. The cover consists of a tempered glass plate
backed with laminate which can be used in conjunction with 90
grit silicon carbide (supplied) to lap the stones to a fl atness of
plus or minus 0.001” per inch of stone length.
